Lobster

Excellent as the food is in the regular dining rooms on the Princess cruise ships, I like to enjoy at least one meal in the alternate dining venues. I was curious about the concept of shared dining in the SHARE restaurant on the Ruby Princess, but as it turned out the sharing bit seems to have gone by the wayside. The tables were separate and we were seated at a table for two. The alternate dining in this case is a 6 course menu created by Chef Curtis Stone  - with a choice of 2 or 3 dishes per course,...

Chef Amadeo Scarin

As Executive Chef on the Ruby Princess, Chef Amadeo is responsible for 260 personnel, of whom 200 are cooks, who prepare 16,000 dishes every day. No- that is not a typo!  Think 3000 guests, over 1000 staff, and at least 3 meals a day. An early riser, chef makes his rounds of the many food venues around the ships before meeting with the 29 chefs who supervise the various kitchens, including his Chef de Cuisine and 5 Sous chefs. They review dishes and meal services from the day before to get feedback and hear of any issues, and then review...

Deck 7- Promenade

My last cruise on a jewel Princess, the Sapphire Princess, was four years ago and the Ruby Princess was refurbished in 2015, so my first instinct once I had found my cabin was to check out the Promenade deck and see whether the dance venues were as I remembered them.

We headed up to the very top deck to see the disco,  Skywalkers nightclub. The space was bigger than I remembered from other ships but the dance surface is not great to dance on. Its a good space during days at sea for small group classes.

Mexican Riviera Cruise

During the years I worked at C&W Hospital, the rainy winter months in Vancouver never bothered me. I was usually at work early and it was dark by the time I left for home. But the incessant rain and dreary greyness this November was denervating and the thought of a West Cost cruise down to sunny Mexico was appealing. I found the perfect choice  - a 7 night cruise on the Ruby Princess.

Princess is one of my three cruise lines of choice, and I have cruised on several Princess ships of different capacity from the  Regal Princess with around...

Caramelized Brussel sprouts
  1. Some time ago I had the pleasure of reviewing a very special cookbook, written and compliled by  Dancing Chef, Natasha MacAller. The book was called Vanilla Table. As it happened, Natasha was visiting Vancouver, and I met with her at the Granville Island Hotel. The links to  my review of Vanilla Table and my interview with the dancing chef, are shown below.

At the time, Natasha mentioned that together with her colleague, Chef Anne Conness and her team, they would be opening a restaurant called Sausal, a short drive from LAX airport. Most of my west coast flights are into...

cheeseccake in a cup

The Wonderful Women Vancouver Network held our first fall social event on Tuesday evening this week, previous annual events having been held in the spring. The location for our Wonderful Women Welcome Winter event was the Lounge and Bar at the Granville Island Hotel. Amanda and I took our water ferry across to Granville Island and met Cathy, our co-organizer, to get set up and meet the staff who would be facilitating the event.

A Bring On Tomorrow Co. Production

Vancouver, BC: A successful Broadway musical with the entire cast as well as the band made up of teenagers?  Seems an unlikely scenario, and yet that was the situation when 13 opened on Broadway in October of 2008. Although this Vancouver production does not have teenagers as band members, the cast features 19 local teen actors, who despite their youth seem to have...
rotisserie chicken

The challenge: Oven roasted chicken or rotisserie chicken, which is better? I acquired a Deni Vertical Rotisserie a while ago - it's a long story - but had not got around to using it. My daughter pointed out that she had happy childhood memories of my oven roasted chicken dinners and wondered how rotisserie roasted chicken could possibly be better. We had two organic free range chicken to cook so voila- this was a perfect time to compare the two methods.

taramosalata

Among the many Mediterranean dips like humus and tsaztiki, my two favorites are taramasalata and babaganoush. I've experimented with making my own taramasalata but it just does not compare with the one from The Greek by Anatoli. Picking up a takeout container of taramasalata has become my current guilty pleasure.
