Pourhouse Restaurant on Urbanspoon

I grew up in a small hotel where from time to time, the chef would prepare "marrow bones on toast" for the dinner menu. This was considered a great delicacy. The bones were sliced horizontally in cross-section so there would be a couple of round sections of bone on the plate with thin slices of toast. I remember digging out the small globules of marrow, smearing them on the toast and enjoying the rich creamy flavour. So when I saw roasted bone marrow with sea salt, radish and grilled bread under the appetizer section of this menu, I had to try it.

Six of us converged on the Pourhouse Restaurant in Gastown to celebrate a birthday. Our birthday girl loves jazz and every Sunday night the restaurant features a band so this was the perfect choice for her birthday dinner.

Between us we had a variety of salads and appetizers, and two of our group could not resist the Mac and cheese with bacon  which was quite a substantial portion.

The raw oysters came with the usual mignonette sauce; minced shallots , pepper and vinegar.

Rather than a main course I decided on two appetizers - the first was the roasted marrow bone - full of creamy flavour as I remembered but perhaps a little too rich for me at this stage of my life.

My second choice was the mushroom tart with aged cheddar and pesto. The thickly sliced Portobello mushrooms were served on a flaky pastry base. It was delicious and I ate every morsel.

Three people had dinner salads.

The Nicoise salad with artichokes, olives and green beans in a lemon vinaigrette was served with seared albacore tuna.

The beet salad was served with lots of roasted fennel, goat cheese and candied orange.  The Kale salad came with smoked bacon, croutons and anchovy dressing.

For the birthday "cake" she chose warm chocolate chip cookies. There were six on the plate- just perfect. The chocolate oozed over my fingers and unabashed, I licked it off with total enjoyment.

Good supper, excellent service, enjoyed the music and a great time was had by all including our birthday girl.
