wineflight12This is the second time I have eaten at r.tl but as the previous occasion was a spontaneous visit I did not have my camera with me, and I felt the attractive presentation of the dishes warranted visual rather than verbal images. My first visit was a few weeks ago: while walking back from the theatre. My friend and I wanted to continue our discussion of the performance over a light meal, and on the spur of the moment, dropped into r.tl. It was a little late in the evening for eating, by my standards anyway; from years of arriving home from work famished I am usually ready for dinner before 6 pm! But we were warmly welcomed by Alain Canuel, operations director and Sommelier, who explained the concept behind the menu. I enjoyed the couple of dishes we had so much that I vowed to return with my camera, and learn more about the regional tasting concept.

Erik Smith, Executive Chef, changes his menu every couple of months to offer tapas style dishes from different regions of the world. He features three regions at a time, and while dishes of British Columbia are always featured, the other two regions change. Currently he is featuring Portugal and France.

This evening I have with me a friend from Arizona who I just met on my dance cruise. We decide to be adventuresome and select a flight of three wines - 2.5 oz each. We both like white wines and chose two Rieslings, a drier wine from Alsace and a sweeter Rieslng from Germany, as well as a Pinot Gris from the Okanagan. I enjoyed all three of our selections. As a Riesling lover I was surprised to find how much I liked our local Kettle Valley Pinot Gris, which had a faint blush tinge.

Smoked duck While Jennifer was fetching our wine, we settled after some negotiation, on four dishes plus the bread basket. From the BC menu we chose the crab and shrimp cakes, from Portugal, the prawns in a spicy piri-piri sauce and from France. the vegetarian asparagus and blue cheese tart, and the smoked breast of Magret Duck. My friend was initially reluctant to try the smoked duck but later declared it was absolutely delicious. We both could not resist sopping up some of the sauces with our bread.
tart
I was delighted with our food choices. i loved the oaky smoke flavour of the duck which was enhanced by the the sweetness of grapes. The crab cakes were firm and delicately flavoured; a nice contrast to the piri-piri prawns which were spicy but not overly so. The latter dish evoked long ago memories of my favorite restaurant in Cape Town which featured prawns piri-piri,  a dish brought to the Cape from neighbouring Mocambique, originally a Portuguese colony.  The vegetarian tart was quite delicious. I love  blue cheese and it complimented the asparagus in the tart to perfection.

As a first time visitor to Vancouver, my friend was greatly impressed by the quality and the presentation of the food. I was pleased with my choice of r.tl as a chance to show off both the great variety of food available to us locally, and an example of the many imaginative dining concepts featured in our restaurants

I understand that the menu will be soon switching to feature dishes from Italy and Greece next and I plan to go back to try those out.

Thanks for the descriptive and helpful review. I've been wanting to go to RTL for a while but have not had the chance yet, this review makes me want to book this evening! The duck sounds delicious, based on the menu on the website it's house smoked with wine barrel oak?

Thank you for your comment. Yes in fact this dish is smoked with a French Oak Barrel graciously given to me by Charles Herrold at Blackwood Lane Winery. It is one of those career dishes on my menu that will be a mainstay for a long time to come. Every once and I while I give a piece of my precious oak to patrons that share my excitment for this dish, but I also have managed to package them for sale. Amazing in the coals of your BBQ. Cant wait to see you.

Sincerely
Chef Erik Smith

This was an interesting and fun adventure for me. Coming from Arizona, I am used to "dining" on Mexican food, steaks, bar-b-cue, and very basic dishes. Actually, we do have many more cultural and upscale choices, but I am seldom with friends who enjoy this type of experience. So it was a special treat and just confirmed my thoughts that Vancouver is a "cut above." I loved your city and hope to return again!

This restaurant is a gem in yaletown. It's a powerhouse in a small space, I also had the luck to try their Middle East menu when they were not on everyone's radars yet, it was the most amazing food experience. Can't wait to go back for Italy and Greece when it comes.

Greece and Italy are already on their menu!

I didn't realize they had different menus before, just now found out that's what they do. Interesting idea.

Make sure you have the gnocchi!!! If you don't mind a bit of spice.

I had read your review of r.tl a while ago and when I saw it on the tourism vancouver dine out list, we had to go and check it out. Amazing! They happened to have the smoked duck on the dineout menu so we tried it, my gf is not that adventrous and duck is not really something she goes for, but she loved it! We also had a mushroom risotto with truffle, which was quite tasty, I could probably have just a big bowl of it for dinner. I had the salmon with grainy mustard and maple glaze for the main course, and I loved the flavour of salmon coming through and complimented with the mustard and maple glaze. Unlike a certain other chain restaurant where the maple glazed salmon is so drenched in glazing, so you dont taste any salmon anymore. I also tried a few bites of the bacon wrapped chicken dish my gf ordered, quite nice, the bacon was smokey and a great combination with the chicken. There was also a steak on the mains but we did not order it, since the salmon and chicken on the adjacent table we were so attractive, next time maybe! For dessert, who could say no to fresh berries and thick cream and a chocolate brownie cake? I suggest you visit and try the $28 menu during dineout before it ends!

My timing is off for Dine Out Vancouver as I am in Kelowna for the Spring Wine Festival. But watch for my reviews of some great dining in the Okanagan.

After reading your great review I went to check out RTL last night. While they have changed their menu a bit -- they do two regions now instead of three because they found that they could go more in depth with 7-8 dishes per region rather than 3-4, and they have added a selection of "large plates" that are also good for sharing, but much bigger than the regular tapas style plate that they do. All of that being said, the food was outstanding! It's worth a trip for the mushroom and truffle risotto alone! The restaurant was packed and many tables turned over two or three times, but we never felt rushed. The staff was great, and again, the food was so good! I can't wait to back again and maybe try one of the larger dishes... Thanks for the reviews; I never have to think about where I'm going to eat downtown, I just look for your latest great experiences!
