Adesso Bistro on Urbanspoon

We were heading off to see Singing in the Rain at Theatre Under the Stars  at  the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park so we thought a restaurant in the West End would work well for us. I had  previously dined at the Haro Street location when It was Parkside , but had not been there recently.

Adesso Bistro is new and we were interested to try it out. Parking is a bit of a problem in that area so we used the valet parking service. We decided that as the evening was so pleasant,  dining outside on their enclosed patio would be great.

For two people we figured four of their appetizer portions would work just fine so each of us selected two from the menu.

arancini on pepperonataThe first up was the Arancini with risotto, prosciutto and mozarella, pepperonata - a  selection of my dining companion. They were delightfully crisp on the outside.

The second choice was Vitello tonnato - chilled poached veal with creamy tuna sauce.  The sauce was so tasty that we both wished we were cats, so to speak.

My two choices followed:
The Carpaccio of bison with beet vinaigrette, parmesan cheese and crispy thin sliced garlic was beautifully presented and satisfying.

bruschettavitella tonnatoThe bruschetta with four different toppings: chicken liver patè, oliveade, parmesan and tomato-basil, was very nice but not a very appealing presentation.

The olive tapenade provoked an interesting discussion about  how one could detest the taste of whole olives yet quite enjoy olive tapenade which is really just whole olives ground up. We had no explanation but that's my situation.

Overall we enjoyed our meal. The patio was really pleasant although unfortunately the restaurant can't control the occasional smoker who stands on the other side of the hedge puffing away.

We  collected the car and within about 5 minutes were  pulling into the parking lot for TUTS, so this is certainly another convenient location for a pre-show dinner.

Comments

This restaurant was a HUGE disappointment. A birthday celebration was arranged for a group of 14. Our group dines out together at frp, 2 to 4 times per month. The person organizing this particular outing had read good reviews about the new Adesso Bistro. Unfortunately, it appears that the reviews may have been written by either friends of the owner, the restaurant staff or paid food critics.
The main course and appetizer portions were tapis size at best. Although the food for the most part was tasty it had clearly sat around for sometime before being served. Odd considering the restaurant was nearly empty. The staff are lacking in training and table service etiquette . Rating: 14 out of 14 guests rated this restaurant from poor to mediocre.

It is really too bad that your group has had such a bad experience.  Its certainly not good practice on the part of the restaurant to disappoint such a large group of potential return customers. Our experience was certainly more pleasant and we enjoyed a nice, if not outstanding dinner,   even though I am neither a "friend of the owner, the restaurant staff or a paid food critic" - though I would love it if some organzation would pay me!

And by the way I pay for all my meals, and the restaurant does not know I am going to write a review.

I am a friend of staff of Adesso and my friend said your group took two hours to show up on a busy night and then at the end you didn't have enough money to pay. You have posted your nasty comments everywhere you can for no reason at all. Everyone without a chip on their shoulder loves this place so you should just chill.

Thanks for providing another perspective to the negative comments posted by the previous guest. Hopefully other diners will judge the quality of the food and the service for themselves.

i thought it was EXCELLENT. (in regards to the bad review) everything from food to service was excellent. I have never written a critic before. I though it was good enough to write one. (: I am not a friend, never knew this place existed until going tonight for the first time

I am pleased that diners who have had a good experience here are writing in.

Please note that I write the actual reviews - and my review of Adesso was not a bad one.

It was a comment from another diner who unfortunately did  not share your good experience, that has everyone riled up.
